Arrowheads are excellent for shallow water, especially on marshy lakeshores and margins of slow-moving streams. They do well in sandy, silty or peaty soils. Common arrowhead has broad leaves and showy flowers. This and northern arrowhead (S. cuneata) have edible tubers that are valuable to wildlife, hence the alternative names, duck potato and wapato.
